On Oct, 10, McPhy took part in the launch event of the “Zero Emission Valley” (ZEV) project in Grenoble, hosted by the “Grenoble Alpes Metropole”.
The “Zero Emission Valley” project is an ambitious program initiated, and is led by, the Auvergne Rhône Alpes Region. It aims at developing, in a very short term (by 2023) a hydrogen infrastructure made of:
- 20 hydrogen refueling stations,
- 15 electrolyzers,
- And 1000 hydrogen-powered vehicles: the equivalent of 25% of the objectives set in France’s national plan.
The French Auvergne Rhône Alpes Region, which gathers almost 80% of the hydrogen sector’s players, aspires to become one of the main innovative European Region in terms of clean mobility, while offering to its citizens a joint-answer to 3 major contemporary issues:
- Environmental challenge: hydrogen, produced by electrolysis from renewable electricity sources, is a clean energy. This means that hydrogen vehicles only reject water vapor, no pollutants and no CO2 (unlike the fossile fuels). Hydrogen hence contributes to the fight against climate change and helps protect public health.
- Economic challenge: creating and strengthening the hydrogen sector has direct (positive!) impacts on the economic landscape. Hydrogen is thus part of the territories’ reindustrialization, a source of local job creation. Not forgetting that the widespread of thetechnology will have a direct impact on the competitiveness of hydrogen, by reducing the acquisition costs of hydrogen equipment (electrolyzers, hydrogen refueling station, vehicles), while offering at the station a clean energy competitive with fossil fuels.
- Societal challenge: the growth of the hydrogen sector is accompanied by a rise in knowledge / skills level, and aims at creating local employment. The decarbonization of the end-uses in the mobility sector, but also in the industry and energy markets, also contributes in cleaning the air and preserving public health.
For Grenoble Alpes Metropole, the ZEV project is a natural extension of its “low-emission zones” program, and complementary to the local initiatives already undertaken to improve the urban air quality.
The project is supported by a public – private partnership, and co-funded by European funds.
How can the world eliminate CO2 emissions?
Through the “H2 Challenge” on October 10, Italy and Southern Europe are launching a proactive policy to speed up the deployment of hydrogen.
Identified as a key player both in the market and in this geographical area, McPhy is invited by SNAM (one of the leaders in the European gas sector) to these 2-day conference on 10 & 11 October 2019 in Rome – Italy.
The event focuses on hydrogen’s potential as a clean energy towards this widespread adaptation of renewable energy and the decarbonization of mobility, industry and energy sectors. Indeed, the environmental, societal and governmental (ESG) factors become increasingly important in companies’ roadmap. Today we must find new solutions to accelerate decarbonization; and even more in sectors with the greatest environmental impact.
During these two days, many topics around hydrogen will be discussed. Bertrand Amelot, EVP “Sales & Marketing” of McPhy will give a keynote speech during the “Hydrogen Value Chain” round table on Friday 11 October at 10:30 AM, and to discuss about the production of decarbonated hydrogen by electrolysis.

How to kick start the EU Hydrogen Industry to achieve the EU climate goals?
McPhy is invited to the “Hydrogen 4 climate action” Conference on October 9, 2019 in Brussels – Belgium.
Organized by the EU Commission, DG grow and Hydrogen Europe, its main focus is to kick start an EU hydrogen industry, in a common interest of Europe’s Member States.
The strategic role of hydrogen in meeting the contemporary economic, environmental and societal challenges is well established. Europe now intends to identify the areas that are ready to accelerate the deployment of available technologies in all related sectors.
The event will provide an overview of existing initiatives, describe activities in various European regions, present significant projects of common European interest currently being developed, create a launchpad platform to integrate further similar initiatives all over Europe.

This event was a full success: over 450 stakeholders from all across Europe attended the event and 1366 followed the web streaming.
Among the key highlights:
- IPCEI: 60 billion € investment, will save 35 million tons of CO2 emissions per year. The conference kick-started the work on the Important Projects of Common European Interests (IPCEI). The IPCEI is one of the most important tools to upscale the European Strategic Value Chain (SVC) on hydrogen technologies and systems, seen as a key sector in the EU, notably for its expected contribution to achieving the EU climate objectives. The projects presented during the event will mean an investment of more than €60 billion over the next 5-10 years and, once completed, they will save 35 million tons of CO2 emissions per year
- Hydrogen sector: industrialists are ready for the scale-up! The speakers of the CEOs high level panel – among whom Pascal Mauberger, CEO, McPhy – all agreed and sent the same collective message: the hydrogen industry is ready to scale up and bring down costs.
- Strong signal and call from the automotive sector. The conference attendees also witnessed the joint call from the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA), Hydrogen Europe and the International Road Transport Union (IRU) for the accelerated deployment of hydrogen refueling infrastructure across the EU.

Methanol, a rapidly-changing market Challenges and Solutions for its decarbonation.
Used extensively as an intermediary in the chemical sector (more than 70%) and also an input in fuel composition; the methanol molecule is obtained by combining CO2 and hydrogen.
With an annual global demand of nearly 80 million tons and significant growth potential (estimated demand of 97 million tons by 2023), methanol produced from decarbonated hydrogen could become a key factor in a successful energy transition for the industry: the “Clean Industry Revolution”.
